Digital Eye Fatigue
Protect your eyes in the screen age
💻 What Is Digital Eye Fatigue (CVS)?
Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) is not a single disease but a collection of eye and vision complaints caused by prolonged digital screen use. It can affect anyone using screens for more than 2 hours a day.
While permanent structural damage is not proven, it significantly reduces quality of life — decreased productivity, headaches, and general discomfort.

😣 Common Symptoms
- Eye strain and pain — worsens toward end of workday
- Headaches — forehead and temple area
- Blurred vision — difficulty focusing near or far
- Dry eyes — burning, stinging, gritty feeling
- Neck and shoulder pain — from poor posture
- Double vision — rarely, after extended close work
- Light sensitivity — discomfort in bright light
📏 Ergonomic Screen Setup
| Factor | Recommended |
|---|---|
| Screen distance | 50-70 cm (arm's length) |
| Screen position | Top edge at or slightly below eye level |
| Screen brightness | Match ambient lighting |
| Font size | Large enough to read comfortably |
| Room lighting | Soft light behind the screen |
| Sitting posture | Back straight, feet flat on floor |
💧 Blinking & Dry Eye Prevention
Normal blink rate is 15-20 per minute. At screens, it drops to 5-7. This causes tear film evaporation and dry eyes.
Solutions:
- Practice conscious blinking
- Use preservative-free artificial tears (with doctor's advice)
- Keep room humidity at 40-60%
- Ensure AC isn't blowing directly on your face
🔵 Blue Light: Fact or Fiction?
There is no conclusive scientific evidence that blue light causes serious structural eye damage. However:
- Nighttime blue light suppresses melatonin → disrupts sleep
- Blue light filter glasses are optional but may help sleep at night
- Most important: turn off screens 1 hour before bedtime
⏰ Daily Break Plan
| Frequency | Duration | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| Every 20 min | 20 seconds | Look at distance (20-20-20 rule) |
| Every 45-60 min | 5-10 min | Stand up, walk, look out window |
| Every 2 hours | 15-20 min | Full break: eyes rest, neck-shoulder stretches |
| Lunch break | 30-60 min | No screens, walk outside if possible |
🧘 Simple Eye Relaxation
Palming: Rub palms for 10 sec, place warm hands over eyes for 30 sec in darkness.
Near-far focusing: Hold a pen at 30 cm, focus 5 sec, then look at a point 6 m away for 5 sec. Repeat 10 times.
Warm compress: Place a clean, warm cloth over closed eyes for 5-10 min. Opens meibomian glands, improves tear quality.
