Focus and attention

Focus ladder

Read a line of letters as it shrinks step by step, then relax your eyes on a distant object.

  • 90 seconds
  • Medium

Sit about an arm’s length from the screen. Keep your head still and use only your eyes.

In the focus ladder exercise a sequence of letters appears on the screen and becomes smaller step by step, like the rungs of a ladder. At each step you try to read the letters calmly. After the smallest step, you are prompted to look away and relax your eyes on an object in the distance. Then the ladder begins again.

Reading smaller and smaller letters asks your eyes to focus precisely (accommodate) and your attention to stay on fine detail. Looking into the distance afterwards lets the focusing muscle relax. Alternating between these two states gives your eyes a structured change from the constant, unvarying near focus of screen work. It is a more detailed version of the near-far focus exercise.

This is not a vision test, and the smallest step you can read depends on your screen, distance and lighting. If you want a rough screening of your sharpness of vision, use the visual acuity test or the near vision test. Be aware that focusing exercises cannot reverse age-related changes or refractive errors. If small letters are consistently blurry, the right response is an eye examination and suitable glasses, not more effort.

How to do it

  1. Sit at your usual screen distance with good, even lighting.
  2. Press start and read the first, largest letters calmly.
  3. Move down the ladder, reading each smaller step without squinting or leaning forward.
  4. When you reach a step you cannot read, simply note it and do not strain.
  5. At the prompt, look at a distant object and let your eyes relax for several seconds.
  6. Repeat the ladder until the timer ends, blinking normally.

What it helps with

  • Practises precise focusing on fine detail
  • Alternates focusing effort with distance relaxation
  • Encourages calm, unstrained reading habits
  • Makes you aware of how lighting and distance affect clarity

Tips

  • Do not squint or lean towards the screen – relax instead.
  • Wear your normal glasses for screen work.
  • Look out of a window during the relaxation phase if you can.

Caution: Stop if you develop eye strain, headache or double vision. If the letters you can read become noticeably larger over time, or vision changes suddenly, see an eye care professional.

Frequently asked questions

Is the focus ladder a vision test?

No. It is an exercise. Screen size, distance and lighting make the results unsuitable for measuring vision.

Why look into the distance after each ladder?

Looking far away lets the focusing muscle relax after the effort of reading small letters.

Will it reduce my need for glasses?

No. Exercises do not change refractive errors or age-related focusing changes.
